Monterey Park offers a tranquil and safe refuge from the hussles of big city life, but is hardly a typical bedroom community.  With about 65% of the city zoned for single-family housing, the community is blessed with charming neighborhoods of all kinds: quaint  cul-de-sacs lined with family homes, condos ideal for young couples, and affordable apartments for seniors, living on fixed incomes.

PARTNERSHIP WITH EAST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE

The City of Monterey Park Housing Division of the Economic Development Department is working together with the Architecture Department of East Los Angeles College (ELAC) on a water-saving landscaping design for an Affordable Housing Project.

The four- unit affordable Housing Project located at 371 E. Pomona Blvd is in the process of a major rehabilitation. The project is incorporating many energy saving materials in the rehabilitation. Included in the project is a water conservation landscape.

The collaboration with the Architecture Department of ELAC is to work with enrolled students to provide several design concepts for the landscaping on the project. Students are provided an opportunity to interface with city staff in completing instructional projects. This experimental learning is an important component of their instructional program.

The City is pleased to have the assistance of the students and the staff of the Architectural Department at ELAC to provide this valuable service to the Housing Division for the rehabilitation project.
