Commission, committee, and board members are expected to attend all scheduled meetings. The City Council wants the benefit of the full commission’s judgment. Whenever possible, members should notify their staff representative, the chairperson, or a person designated by the commission, committee, or board within 24 hours of a scheduled meeting if unable to attend a meeting.
A commission, committee, or board member shall be relieved of his/her responsibilities for lack of attendance.
- For commissions, boards, and committees that meet regularly once a month, members shall be dismissed after three absences (whether excused or unexcused) during the calendar year.
- For commissions, boards, and committees that meet regularly two times or more per month, members shall be dismissed after six absences during the calendar year.
- For those commissions, boards and committees that meeting bimonthly (every other month), members shall be dismissed after two consecutive absences.
In addition, an individual shall be deemed absent if they are tardy by more than 30 minutes. After the first, second or fifth absence, which is applicable, the chairperson or vice-chair shall send a warning notice to the delinquent member through registered mail. Upon the second, third, or sixth absence, whichever is applicable, the chairperson or vice-chair shall notify the Mayor and City Clerk’s office that the subject member is terminated (see Municipal Code 2.82.010, Subsection c).
Any member of any City commission, committee or board appointed by the City Council and terminated from said commission, committee or board as a result of absences, whether excused or unexcused, cannot be nominated for appointment to any other commission, committee or board for a period of six months after said termination became effective. Members of the Library Board of Trustees are not subject to these provisions.
